Weekly Announcements

May 31, 2020

Worship Service Broadcast
On Sunday May 31, we will livestream both our Thrive and traditional worship services. Thrive will Livestream from the Fellowship Hall beginning at 8:55 a.m., and traditional worship will Livestream from the sanctuary at 11:00 a.m. Both services will be sent out via E-Blast and will be available on Facebook, and on the church website.

Our worship leaders have prepared virtual services that reflect and include the normal style and worship elements for each service. These elements include liturgy, hymns, praise songs, sermon, and special music. While we are not worshipping in person, we can still join together in the body of Christ. Please join us as we virtually worship God together!

Sacred Space at Home
Since worshipping at home has become the new normal, choose a place in your house to be your sacred space! Work with your family to gather items such as fabric, candles, stones, plants, a cross, or other symbols to decorate this space. Email us a photo of your sacred space and we’ll share them with the congregation on social media!

In the midst of unusual times, Christ still calls us to give as we have received. Please consider continuing to give your pledges and offerings. Gifts may be received by mail at 1621 East Garrison Boulevard, Gastonia, N.C. 28054, or online at www.fpcgastonia.org/giving. We are grateful for your continued support of the mission and ministry of First Presbyterian Church!

Carenet Counseling
When the COVID-19 outbreak resulted in North Carolina joining the national trend to limit social movement, CareNet Counseling sprang into action to adjust.

As an essential service, Carenet Counseling is committed to providing clinical mental health care to all of its clients—while also protecting clients and staff. Because of the quick actions and flexibility of CareNet’s compassionate team, they have enabled counselors throughout the state to continue providing secure, internet-based telehealth service.

Today, 90% of our counselors have transitioned to telehealth, and they have taken steps to ensure our offices that remain open are safe for counselors and clients.By all accounts, the need for counseling is as crucial now as ever. Referrals continue to be strong and our counselors are still working at full capacity. Carenet Counseling remains committed to serving clients regardless of their ability to pay. In this difficult time, CareNet Counseling will continue to be a source of strength for our communities.

To schedule an appointment, call Russ Keeney at 704-291-4173. Russ hopes to be of assistance to you during this time of transition.
Zoom Update
Zoom has updated its user interface to help improve connections and security for its users. All Zoom users will need to update their app or client before May 30, in order to continue using this service.

You may use the link below to download the client update on your device. Click on the first link to update on your PC or Mac, or scroll down to update on a mobile device. This update only takes a minute to complete, so go ahead and update before your next meeting!

Masks for Ministry
A group of volunteers that includes Betsy Keith, Barbara Yarbrough, and Ibby Page from First Presbyterian Church, along with others from First Methodist Church, have been working with the Gastonia Parish Nurse Ministry to sew face masks for those in need in our community. This group has already donated over 500 masks, including 200 masks for the homeless population in the area, and continues to receive requests from other agencies, facilities, and individuals who have a great need. We are seeking additional volunteers to help sew two-ply cloth face masks for this purpose. If you like to sew, we would love for you to share your talents with this ministry at a time when protective equipment can be hard to find.

If you are in need of a face mask, pick up/drop off can be arranged.

Contact Lisa Marisiddaiah at nurse@fpcgastonia.org to volunteer or for more information regarding this ministry.
Recycle for Sight Program
As you are cleaning your house and closets during your time-at-home, please consider donating old eyeglasses or sunglasses to the "Recycle for Sight" program. Your old glasses can bring a new view to someone else in a developing country, perhaps allowing them to read, go to school, or gain employment.

Please contact Lisa Marisiddaiah at nurse@fpcgastonia.org for more information!
YMCA Childcare and Summer Programing
During the month of February, we were in the process of finalizing a formal partnership with the Warlick YMCA to offer childcare programming at First Presbyterian Church. In this plan, First Presbyterian Church would offer the location, and the Warlick YMCA would facilitate all programing. This arrangement was set to begin at the end of the 2019-20 school year, starting with 2020 summer camp programming. However, the COVID-19 crisis has disrupted this initial plan.

Instead, the Y has been working diligently to figure out how to offer childcare programs (like summer day camp) in a way that meets all CDC, Health Department, and State guidelines and requirements, and in as safe an environment as possible for the working parents in our community. In light of this, the Y has made the decision to pull summer camps from its various branches and off-site locations, and instead to centralize its programs in one location. For the 2020 summer season, the Y will offer its summer day camp program out of the Pharr Family YMCA location only. This branch will be primarily run as a Youth Program Center as they operate under the modified circumstances that COVID-19 requires.

If you are interested in participating in the summer day camp program, registration will open online on May 27. If you have any questions, please contact the Warlick YMCA at 704-830-9622.

Join us this summer for A GREAT BIG, BEAUTIFUL WORLD as we explore God's magnificent creation! We need volunteers to make VBS a success! There are many tasks to do before, during, and after VBS.
